James P. Nolan Elected Secretary of the National Conference of Bar Presidents

James P. Nolan, Managing Director of the Annapolis law firm, Council, Baradel, Kosmerl & Nolan, P.A., was elected Secretary of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) at the annual meeting of the American Bar Association and NCPB which was recently held in San Francisco, California. Mr. Nolan is a past president of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association and the Maryland State Bar Association and previously served a three year term as a member of the NCBP Executive Council. He will proceed through the chairs and become President of NCBP in 2010. NCBP was founded in 1950 to provide information and training to state and local bar association leaders. Several of its past presidents have gone on to become president of the American Bar Association. The organizational members of NCPB include state, local, municipal and special focus bar associations from fifty-three states and territories and its individual members include past bar leaders from these jurisdictions.
The primary purpose of NCBP is to provide high quality programming to current bar leaders at two meetings held each year contemporaneously with the annual and mid-year meetings of the American Bar Association. At these meetings, former bar presidents and other resource persons provide presentations and workshops focused on relevant topics of interest to bar leaders and bar associations. NCBP also publishes an online newspaper and offers other useful resources through its website.
Ted Staples Appointed as President of the Anne Arundel County Bar Foundation

In July, 2007, Ted Staples, a past President of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, was appointed to a one year term as President of the Anne Arundel County Bar Foundation. The Bar Foundation serves as the charitable arm of the Bar Association and oversees the Bar Association's fundraising/volunteer events such as the annual Thanksgiving turkey drive, the Barrister's Ball for the benefit of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Back to School Backpack Program.
Ted Staples Appointed to Maryland State Bar Association Board of Governors Executive Committee

In June, 2007, Ted Staples, who is beginning his second year on the MSBA Board of Governors, was appointed to the Executive Committee by President Alison Asti. The Executive Committee consists of the officers of the MSBA, a Young Lawyers representative and three at-large members of the Board of Governors, chosen by the President. Mr. Staples is one of President Asti's selections. The term on the Executive Committee coincides with Mr. Staples' term on the Board.

C. Sussman Re-elected to Serve as Chair of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel
County Chamber of Commerce for 2006

Fred
Sussman has been re-elected to serve a second one-year term as Chair of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel
County Chamber of Commerce for 2007, after serving as Chair in 2006 and Vice Chair
in 2004 and 2005. Mr. Sussman also is serving his second
three year term on the Chamber's Board of Directors. Mr. Sussman
served as the Chamber's Secretary-Treasurer in 2003 and, previously,
had served for many years as Chair of the Chamber's Government
Relations Committee. Under Mr. Sussman's leadership of the Chamber's
Strategic Planning Committee, the Chamber recently completed the
development and adoption of a new mission statement, "Business
leadership to build and sustain a vibrant community throughout Anne Arundel County." The Annapolis
and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest
Chambers of Commerce in Maryland, representing more than 1,100
businesses in and around Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis.

Frederick C. Sussman Continues Service On Code Revision Article Review
Committee

Mr. Sussman continues to serve as a member of the 12 person Code Revision Article Review Committee for the Local Government Article. The President of the Maryland Senate and the Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates appointed Mr. Sussman to the Committee in September 2005.
The
Committee is responsible for working with the Maryland Department
of Legislative Services to undertake a comprehensive review and
recodification of laws that affect local governments in Maryland.
The work of the Committee is expected to be completed in the late
spring or early summer of 2009, so that legislation to adopt the
recodification can be introduced for adoption at the 2010 session
of the Maryland General Assembly.
Mr.
Sussman's appointment as one of two municipal attorneys on the
Committee was a recognition of Mr. Sussman's more than 30 years
experience as an attorney for counties, municipalities, special
taxing districts and quasi-government entities.Mr.
Sussman began his career involvement with legislative matters
as a Bill Drafter with the Department of Legislative Reference,
a predecessor to the Department of Legislative Services, during
the 1975 session of the Maryland General Assembly.

On
June 17 2006, Ted Staples was elected to a two-year term on the
Maryland State Bar Association Board of Governors. Mr. Staples,
who just completed his term as President of the Anne Arundel County
Bar Association, will serve on three committees of the MSBA: Planning;
Programs; and Public Awareness.

Staples, who just completed a successful term as President of
the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, has been selected to

As President of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, Mr. Staples
was instrumental in doubling philanthropic contributions by the
membership during his term.

Elected as Maryland Delegate to American Bar Association House

December 21, 2004, the Board of Governors of the Maryland State
Bar Association elected James P. Nolan as a Delegate to represent
Maryland in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association.

N. Russo, Jr. serves on the program committee of Leadership Anne
Arundel (LAA.) LAA is a community-based learning organization
which fosters the development of diverse networks of resourceful,
informed and proactive leaders for Anne Arundel County and the
region. Most recently Mr. Russo chaired the December, 2004 Law
and Public Safety program which developed a full day curriculum
to allow the 2005 LAA class to meet with individuals from both
the community and government who are served by or provide law
and public safety services in Anne Arundel County.
